📝 Google Docs now opens the files your AI writes

Docs can now open, edit and share Markdown files, the plain-text format ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answer in.

Three-minute read. In today’s issue: Google Docs opening the Markdown files your AI tools write, OpenAI’s eight-times-faster mode and who actually gets it, why the cheaper AI model cost more in a third of tests, and a mathematician’s one-shot music video.

WORKSPACE

Google Docs now opens and edits the Markdown files AI tools produce

What changed. Google said Docs can now open, edit and co-edit Markdown (.md) files without converting them, and Drive shows them as formatted previews with working links and tables. It is rolling out to all Workspace customers and personal Google accounts from 5 October, over up to 15 days.

What it means for you. Markdown is the plain-text format AI tools write in, and Google’s own post says it is widely used by large language models. A brief, a proposal or a price list exported from ChatGPT or Claude can now go straight into a shared Doc your team comments on, with the headings intact.

The first step. Ask ChatGPT or Claude to save this week’s draft as a .md file, drop it into Drive, and open it in Docs. Check that the headings and tables came through before you share it.

The limitation. There is no admin switch, so it arrives when Google’s rollout reaches you. The post lists no limits, and we have not tested how complex tables or images survive the round trip.

Just shipped

OpenAI switched on Ultrafast for GPT-6.1 Sol, which it says answers up to eight times faster than the standard mode.

In ChatGPT Work it is only on the Pro 500 plan and on Enterprise plans whose admin turns it on, so Plus and Business teams will not see it. There is nothing to buy here unless waiting for answers is costing you real time. (x.com)

The rest of the day

📋 Trello for Google Workspace now turns an email or a Google Chat message into a Trello card without leaving the tab. Install it from the Workspace Marketplace and try it on the next client request that lands in your inbox. (workspaceupdates.googleblog.com)

💳 OpenAI published a public rate card showing exact per-token prices for its Enterprise ChatGPT plans. Low relevance for small teams, but worth a glance if you are ever quoted an enterprise contract and want to check the numbers against OpenAI’s own figures. (help.openai.com)

🎙️ BetterWispr, a free open-source dictation app for Mac, hit the front page of Hacker News this week. It lets you dictate notes, emails or social captions without paying for a subscription transcription tool. (betterwispr.com)

🌍 Andrej Karpathy estimates about six billion people, roughly 75% of the world, have barely used a chatbot, and says the gap in understanding is widening. Most of your customers are probably on the far side of it, so explain any AI you use in plain words. (x.com)

🛠️ Built with AI

🤖 Notion’s team built a Slack answer bot that logs questions it cannot answer and drafts fixes for a person to approve, then published the recipe. Use it for the questions your staff ask ten times a week; Notion puts the build at about 90 minutes. (notion.com)

🧰 The Open Source Toolshed

What it is. AnythingLLM is a free desktop app that lets you chat with your own PDFs and documents, using either a model on your own computer or a hosted one.

Who it’s for. A small business that wants to ask questions across its own contracts, policies or notes without uploading them to a public chatbot.

How hard it is. Download the installer for Mac, Windows or Linux and point it at a folder; picking a model takes a few minutes of reading.

📈 The AI Odometer

Social Capital bar chart: Gemini 3 Flash lists at $3 per million output tokens against GPT-5.4's $15, yet cost $705 in total across 12 test sets against GPT-5.4's $509

Source: Social Capital, “the hidden cost of cheap ai models”, 11 October 2026, charting Chen et al., “The Price Reversal Phenomenon” (arXiv, May 2026).

In 32% of 336 head-to-head comparisons, the model with the lower list price cost up to 28 times more in total.

What it means for you. The price per token is not the price per job. Before switching to a cheaper model for a long task, run the same task on both and compare the bill. The study measured cost only, not answer quality.

Too early

Notion says it is rebuilding its iPad app as a native app. No release date yet. (x.com)

🎬 One for the road

A mathematician answered OpenAI’s flood of AI-written proofs with a music video made by Claude Opus 5.5, captioned “It saved some for you.”

He says it came out in one shot. Ethan Mollick’s verdict: “Pretty great.” (x.com)
