Where it breaks

All tiers include 100 free credits monthly regardless of paid plan, and unused credits expire at the end of each billing period rather than rolling over — plan usage accordingly rather than stockpiling.

Bardeen is the best-known example of a browser automation extension built specifically for the kind of task that’s tedious rather than technically hard — copying a lead from LinkedIn into a CRM, scraping a list of companies off a directory site, or pulling data from a page you’d otherwise be copy-pasting by hand.

The mechanism is a recorded or pre-built “playbook” that runs against a page you’re looking at, or on a schedule against pages Bardeen visits on its own. That second mode — running unattended, not just when you click a button — is the one that matters: once a playbook is set up, it can run without you watching every execution, the same way a Zapier or Make scenario does, except the actions happen inside a real browser rather than through an API.

Where it fits next to a workflow platform

Bardeen’s edge over a pure API-based automation tool is exactly the sites that don’t have a usable API — a lot of B2B data sources, directories, and internal tools fall in that category, and “click through the actual page” is often the only way in. That’s also its limitation: browser automation is more fragile than an API call, and a site redesign can break a playbook that worked yesterday.

Against the alternatives

Against Make, the two solve different problems: Make orchestrates API-connected services reliably at scale, while Bardeen’s job is specifically the sites and tools that don’t expose an API cleanly, at the cost of being a little more brittle when a target page changes.
