Where it breaks
Hootsuite's per-user pricing sits roughly ten times higher than a lighter tool like Buffer at the entry tier, and the gap holds at every level above it — the extra cost buys listening, forecasting and team workflow features a solo operator or small team rarely needs. Confirm the monthly (non-annual) rate before budgeting, since it isn't published on the plans page.
Browser-based, with mobile apps for managing accounts on the move. Both monthly and annual billing exist, but Hootsuite's own pricing page shows only the annual rate — the monthly figure is meaningfully higher and requires asking sales or checking at checkout.
First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.
Hootsuite is the oldest name in this category, and its pricing reflects a product built for a marketing department rather than a founder posting between meetings. The AI features — caption drafting, image generation, suggested replies in the shared inbox — sit on top of a platform whose real depth is in listening and reporting, not scheduling alone.
What actually separates the tiers
Standard is a genuine social scheduler with a real AI assist layered in. The jump to Professional is where Hootsuite starts behaving like a support tool too — automated inbox workflows and forecasting are features a solo marketer will rarely use to their full extent. Advanced and Enterprise are built for organisations coordinating several people’s replies and approvals across many brand accounts, which is a different job than “post consistently.”
Against Buffer
The honest comparison is depth versus price. Buffer does scheduling and basic analytics cleanly at a fraction of Hootsuite’s cost; Hootsuite adds listening, forecasting and inbox automation that a growing team eventually needs but a solo operator almost never will. Unless brand monitoring across the wider internet — not just your own posts — is a real requirement, Buffer covers the actual daily job for less money.
Where it earns its price
A team managing many brand accounts, coordinating replies across several people, and needing to know what’s being said about the brand beyond its own posts is the audience Hootsuite is actually built for. Below that scale, the price tag is mostly buying capability that goes unused.
