Mistral Le Chat
A chat assistant and coding agent from Europe's largest AI lab, with connectors to Gmail, Drive and Slack, built for teams that need their data to stay under EU rules.
What you'd use it for
Getting a capable AI chat assistant and coding agent from a provider legally bound to EU data protection rules rather than US ones.
- Chat about documents, slides and reports, with web search and citations
- Run an autonomous coding agent in a terminal, an IDE, or in the background, with a progress view and an approval step before it acts
- Read directly from connected Gmail, Drive and Slack accounts instead of pasting content in manually
- Install the Vibe Code CLI and use it fully offline against local models or any OpenAI-compatible API key
The verdict
A competent general assistant with a genuinely usable coding agent bolted on, but it rarely wins on raw capability against ChatGPT or Claude. What it wins on is jurisdiction -- a European vendor under EU law, which is the actual reason a data-residency-conscious business picks it over the American labs. The free tier is a real product rather than a trial, and the coding agent works there too, just capped -- Pro buys more volume, not a different tool. The rebrand mid-product is a genuine annoyance: the name people search for and the name on the page are no longer the same one.
What it costs
| Tier | Price | For | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Trying the assistant with conservative usage limits. | Chat, document handling, basic tool access, $10 a month in API credits, and the Vibe coding agent in the terminal, IDE and background -- limited coding sessions rather than none. |
| Pro | $14.99/month | One person using it as a daily driver, including the coding agent. | All-day coding in the CLI, IDE or on the web rather than limited sessions, $30 a month in API credits, higher usage limits, and pay-as-you-go credits or bring-your-own-key for overflow. |

What you need to start
- An email address, or a Google/Apple account for sign-in -- no credit card for the Free plan
- macOS, Linux or Windows for the Vibe Code CLI
- Python 3.12 or later only if installing the CLI manually rather than via the install script
Under two minutes to a working chat account; about five minutes more to install the Vibe Code CLI and run a first coding task.
Your first run Signing up takes under two minutes with email, Google or Apple sign-on and drops you straight into a chat window; installing the Vibe Code CLI and running a first task in a project directory takes about five minutes more.
Where it breaks
Mistral renamed the product to Vibe in 2026 — the marketing site now calls it 'Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)', though chat.mistral.ai still resolves and the older name is still how most people search for it. Team and Enterprise pricing is not published as fixed tiers; the structured pricing data on the site lists only Free and Pro, with anything beyond that handled through the enterprise sales team.
Web, iOS, Android, macOS, Linux and Windows, plus a CLI and IDE extensions for the coding agent (VS Code, JetBrains, Zed).

When not to use it
Not for anyone choosing purely on model quality -- ChatGPT and Claude are the stronger default picks there. Not for a business with no EU data-residency requirement and no preference for a European lab, since the coding agent alone does not outclass GitHub Copilot or Claude Code enough to justify the switch on its own.
The name on the tin is already out of date. Mistral rebranded Le Chat to Vibe partway through 2026, folding a chat assistant and a coding agent into one product for individuals, teams and enterprises — but the old name is still what shows up in searches and what most people mean when they ask about it, so that is the header here.
What it actually is: an assistant that combines long-horizon chat work — documents, slides, reports, web search with citations — with an autonomous coding agent that runs in a terminal, an IDE, or in the background on its own. Multi-step tasks get live progress and an approval step before they act, rather than running fully unattended.
The case for choosing it over ChatGPT or Claude is rarely capability — it is data residency. Mistral is a European company, and for a business whose lawyers care where a prompt physically sits, that answers a question the American labs cannot. Against DeepSeek, the same logic runs the other direction: Mistral costs money and sits under EU law, DeepSeek is free and sits under Chinese law, and reasonable people land differently depending on which jurisdiction they distrust less.
Connectors to Gmail, Drive and Slack put it a step past a plain chat tab — it can read where your documents already live rather than waiting for you to paste them in — but it still acts when asked, not on a schedule.
Alternatives
ChatGPT
OpenAI's assistant in a browser tab, a desktop app and a phone app, where you ask questions, draft text, and hand it files or spreadsheets to work through.
Claude
Anthropic's AI assistant, available in a browser tab and — the part that matters here — as a desktop app that can read the files on your own machine and reach the systems you connect to it.
DeepSeek
A chat assistant with strong reasoning, free to use in the browser, and an API priced far below the Western labs for anyone building on top of it.
GitHub Copilot
Writes and reviews code alongside you inside the editor, and can now be assigned a whole GitHub issue to work through as an agent.
