Novelcrafter
A novel-writing workspace where you bring your own AI model keys, and the AI reads a story bible you maintain to stay consistent across a long manuscript.
What you'd use it for
Keeping character and plot details straight across a long novel or series while writing with an AI model of your own choosing.
- Keep a story bible (the Codex) of characters, locations and plot threads that the AI reads before generating a scene, so a detail from chapter three carries into chapter thirty
- Generate scene beats, chapter summaries and character extracts from your own draft text, from the Hobbyist tier up
- Connect any OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter or other API-compatible model and switch between them scene by scene
- Track multiple books in a series or shared universe, including multi-POV arcs, from one workspace
- Generate names for characters, places and items with the built-in name generators
The verdict
Novelcrafter is genuinely useful infrastructure for a working novelist who already has an opinion about which model should write their prose and doesn't mind a second bill for it. The Codex is the real product — it solves the specific failure mode of an AI forgetting a detail forty chapters back — and the workspace fee alone is cheap. But bring-your-own-key means the sticker price understates the real cost, since a heavy user running Claude or GPT-class models can spend more on tokens in a month than on the subscription itself. It suits a disciplined indie author more than someone who wants one flat bill and nothing else to manage.

What you need to start
- An account with an external AI vendor (OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, or another API-compatible provider), since Novelcrafter carries no AI credits of its own
- An API key from that vendor, entered into Novelcrafter's AI Connections settings
- A payment method on the vendor account for real generation volume (OpenAI requires a card up front; OpenRouter lets you start without setting a spend limit)
About a minute to create the empty novel shell, then a few minutes more to connect an AI vendor account before generation works at all, per Novelcrafter's own setup guide.
Your first run Creating the novel shell takes about a minute and produces an empty project, no AI involved. The first actual AI-generated scene arrives only after you've connected a vendor account (OpenRouter is the guide's recommended starting point) and given the Codex at least a character or two to draw on.
Where it breaks
Because AI usage is billed separately through your own API key, the real monthly cost of writing a novel here depends entirely on which model you connect and how much you use it — the plan price alone understates the total.
Browser-based. The workspace fee is separate from AI usage cost — you connect your own API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, or others) starting at the Hobbyist tier, so the total monthly cost is the plan price plus whatever your own model usage runs. Annual billing offers roughly two months free. Prices may localise to other currencies by region; the figures above are the site's own USD listing.

When not to use it
Not for a writer who wants a single flat subscription with no separate vendor account or API bill to track, which is what Squibler is built for instead. Also not for anyone planning to stay on the Scribe tier, since AI generation is switched off below $8/month and that plan is organisation only.
Novelcrafter separates two things most AI writing tools bundle together: the workspace, and the AI model itself. You pay Novelcrafter a low monthly fee — as little as $4 — for the writing environment, and connect your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, or another provider to actually generate text. That structure gives you direct control over which model you use and what it costs, instead of an opaque credit system baked into the subscription.
The core feature this workspace is built around is the story bible: a maintained record of characters, locations, plot threads, and world details that the AI reads before generating anything, so a scene written in chapter thirty stays consistent with a detail established in chapter three. That is the specific failure mode long-form fiction runs into with AI assistance, and it’s the problem novelcrafter is designed to solve rather than a general feature bolted on.
Who this actually suits
Bring-your-own-key only makes sense if you’re comfortable managing an API account and watching a separate usage bill — if that sounds like more setup than you want, Squibler bundles AI usage into one flat subscription instead, trading control for simplicity. Novelcrafter has real traction among serious indie novelists specifically because that audience tends to already have opinions about which model they want writing their prose.
What it doesn’t do
Below Hobbyist, the Scribe tier gives you the story-bible workspace without AI generation connected at all — useful as an organisational tool on its own, but the AI features that make this distinct from a plain writing app start at $8/mo, not $4.
