Where it breaks
Web-based; built specifically for B2B software companies supporting technical customers, with deep Slack and issue-tracker integration.
First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.
Most support-inbox tools are built for consumer volume — thousands of near-identical tickets a day. Plain is built for the opposite case: a developer-facing product where each ticket might be a bug report with a stack trace, and the person answering it needs to loop in an engineer in Slack without losing the thread.
The Ari agent handles first-pass triage on every plan, including Foundation, so a two-person startup gets the same automated intake a bigger team does — what changes with the higher tiers is scale (more seats, more AI credits) and the operational scaffolding around it: SLAs, escalation paths, and eventually SSO for a compliance team.
The honest limitation is fit: this is not a general help desk. If your support volume is high-frequency and low-complexity — password resets, order status — a cheaper, simpler inbox will do the job for less. Plain earns its price when the ticket needs an engineer’s attention, not a macro.
Against Helpshift, which is built for in-app mobile and game support, Plain’s natural home is the browser and Slack — pick based on where your users actually reach you, not on feature lists that look similar on paper.
