Supabase

The database and login system most AI app builders create behind the scenes when you ask them to add "user accounts" — you can also use it directly and own the data.

What you'd use it for

Giving an AI-built app a real database and login system you can inspect, query, and take with you if you switch app builders.

  • Store and query app data in a real Postgres database using SQL, not a proprietary format
  • Add email, magic-link, or social login to an app without building an auth system from scratch
  • Store and serve user-uploaded files such as images and documents through built-in storage
  • Run vector search over your own data for AI features like retrieval-augmented generation
  • Edit and browse data directly in a spreadsheet-style table editor without writing SQL

The verdict

Supabase is the backend an AI app builder reaches for on your behalf, and that turns out to be worth knowing directly — it is a real Postgres database, not a proprietary store, so you can inspect the schema, export the data, or move it to a different tool without asking anyone's permission. The free tier is genuinely usable for a prototype, but a live app with real users runs into billed compute and storage quickly, and the $25 Pro price is a floor, not a ceiling. It suits anyone building or maintaining an app who wants to own the data layer directly rather than leave it entirely to whichever AI tool generated it.

What it costs

Tier Price For Includes
Free $0 A first project, a prototype, or something with very light real usage. A hosted Postgres database, authentication, storage, and 50,000 monthly active users.
Pro $25/month A live app with real users where the free tier's limits start to bind. Everything in Free, plus $10/month of included compute credit, daily backups, and no project pausing after inactivity.
Team From $599/month Organisations needing SOC2/ISO 27001 compliance and finer-grained access controls. Everything in Pro, plus project-scoped and read-only access roles, SOC2 and ISO 27001 certification, and SSO for the dashboard.
Enterprise Custom pricing Large-scale deployments needing dedicated infrastructure and support. Dedicated Postgres instances, custom compute sizing (from 2 vCPU / 4 GB up to dedicated large instances), and enterprise support.

What you need to start

  • Email or GitHub account to sign up; no credit card for the free tier
  • Basic comfort with SQL and Postgres concepts to go beyond the built-in table editor
  • A Pro plan at $25/month to avoid free-tier project pausing and get daily backups

A couple of minutes to sign up and provision a working project with a database and API keys; wiring it into your own app and writing real queries is a separate job measured in hours, not minutes.

Your first run Signing up and creating a project takes a couple of minutes to provision, and it lands you in a live Postgres database with a spreadsheet-style table editor and working API keys, so you can create a table and query it inside the dashboard before writing any application code.

Where it breaks

Compute and storage beyond what is included bill separately and can scale quickly for an active app — the $25 Pro price is a floor, not a cap, once real usage kicks in. Free-tier projects pause after a period of inactivity, which surprises people who left a side project alone for a few weeks.

Entirely browser-managed infrastructure — you provision a project through a dashboard, then your own app (built with any framework, or generated by an AI app builder) talks to it via API. Nothing installs locally beyond an optional CLI.

First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.

When not to use it

Not for someone who wants a no-code spreadsheet with some structure and no SQL in sight — Airtable or Baserow serve that need with a gentler learning curve. Also not for anyone unwilling to watch a bill once an app has real traffic, since compute and storage charges beyond the included allowance can exceed the plan price.

Almost nobody sets out to choose Supabase directly. It shows up because you asked an AI app builder — a v0 or Bolt generation, a Lovable app, a Claude-built prototype — to add user accounts or store some data, and the tool reached for Supabase to do it, because it has become the default backend for AI-generated applications.

What you are actually getting is a hosted Postgres database (real SQL, not a proprietary format you’re locked into), an authentication system, file storage, and increasingly, AI features (vector search for retrieval-augmented generation) built on the same platform. Valued at $5 billion in 2025 with more than 3 million databases created, it has earned that default-choice status rather than just inherited it.

It is infrastructure, not a thing that runs on its own

Supabase is infrastructure other software talks to — it does not run anything on a schedule by itself. Your app connects to it, reads and writes data, and authenticates users, but the “acting without you” part of the equation belongs to whatever is built on top of it, whether that is a scheduled job you write or a tool like Make calling its API.

The thing worth knowing before you build

Because AI app builders reach for Supabase automatically, it is worth understanding you own that database independently of whichever builder created it — you can inspect the schema, export the data, or connect a different tool to the same backend at any time. That portability is the actual reason it is worth knowing the name behind the tool that built your app, not just trusting the app builder’s abstraction.
