What you'd use it for

Clearing a high-volume Gmail or Outlook inbox by keyboard alone, with AI drafting replies in your own voice.

  • Draft a reply in your own voice without writing it yourself, pulled from how you've written before
  • Archive, snooze, label and send an entire inbox's worth of email without touching the mouse
  • Have incoming mail sorted into labels and archived automatically against rules you set
  • Ask a plain-language question over your mail history and get the right thread back
  • See when someone has opened an email you sent

The verdict

Superhuman is a genuinely fast keyboard-only inbox, and the AI drafting reads the thread automatically rather than needing an email pasted into a chat window, which is the real edge over ChatGPT or Claude. The features that justify the price — Auto Drafts, Ask AI, custom auto-labelling — sit on the Business tier at $33 a member a month, not the $25 Starter tier. It only pays for itself for someone who lives in their inbox for hours a day; for anyone with a lighter load it is a faster way to do something that was not slow enough to matter.

What you need to start

  • An existing Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook or Microsoft 365 account — no other IMAP or self-hosted provider is supported
  • A completed 1:1 onboarding call before the product unlocks, historically mandatory for every new subscriber

Roughly 30 minutes for the guided onboarding call Superhuman has long required before a new subscriber can use the product at all.

Your first run The onboarding call Superhuman has long required for new subscribers ends with your Gmail or Outlook account connected and enough keyboard shortcuts drilled to send your first AI-drafted reply without touching the mouse, inside that same session.

Where it breaks

Desktop app (macOS, Windows) plus mobile and a web client. Acquired by Grammarly in 2025.

When not to use it

Not for anyone on an email provider other than Gmail or Outlook: Superhuman does not support IMAP or self-hosted Exchange, so switching mail hosts is the real cost of entry. Also not for a light inbox — a mandatory onboarding call and $25-33 a month, billed annually by default, is overhead nobody who checks email twice a day needs.

Superhuman’s whole design premise is that email is too slow, and most of that slowness is the mouse. Every action — archive, snooze, label, send — has a keyboard shortcut, and the interface is built to reward memorising them: a cleared inbox in a fraction of the clicks a normal client takes.

The AI layer, added on top of that speed-first design, drafts replies in your own voice and can auto-label incoming mail, which on the Business tier goes further with an “Ask AI” search over your mail history. It’s priced per member per month, annual billing only shown as the headline rate — Superhuman doesn’t publish a monthly-billing figure on its main pricing page, so budget as if annual commitment is the norm.

Is it worth the jump from a free inbox

$25 or $33 a month is a real cost for something Gmail or Outlook do for free, and the honest case for paying is entirely about time saved by someone who lives in their inbox for hours a day. If email isn’t a bottleneck for you, the speed gains won’t register; if it is, the AI drafting and keyboard-only workflow can be a genuine hour-a-week difference.

Where it fits

Against using ChatGPT or Claude to draft replies inside a normal email client, Superhuman’s advantage is that the AI is contextual to the thread automatically — no copying an email into a chat window and back. The trade is cost and being locked into a dedicated client rather than your existing inbox.
