What you'd use it for

Turning a target keyword into a concrete content brief - word count, headings, related terms - so you know exactly what a page needs to compete, then drafting against it.

  • Generate a content brief for any keyword by scraping and analysing the pages currently ranking for it
  • Score a draft in real time against the terms, headings and structure the top-ranking pages share
  • Draft an article against that brief inside Surfer's own AI content editor, ready for you to edit
  • Track a brand's visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews through the separate AI Search Analytics product
  • Push a finished draft into WordPress or Google Docs through the built-in integrations

The verdict

Surfer is good at replacing vague write-good-content advice with a concrete, ranking-derived checklist, and the AI editor turning that brief straight into a draft saves the blank-page step most SEO tools skip. It costs you a credit card before you can even try the Content Editor, and a subscription that only earns its keep if you're publishing regularly enough to use the document allowance. It suits a team or solo operator already producing SEO content who wants a data-backed brief rather than guesswork; it's a poor fit for a one-off article or anyone wanting to test the core tool without paying first.

What you need to start

  • A credit card at signup, even to start the seven-day trial
  • A target keyword, and ideally an existing draft, to generate a brief against
  • WordPress or Google Docs if you want the checklist to follow you into your actual writing tool

A couple of minutes to a live trial account once you've entered billing details; expect the better part of an hour before a first article clears a competitive Content Score.

Your first run Enter a target keyword in the Content Editor and Surfer analyses the ranking pages and opens a live Content Score in ten to fifteen seconds; getting a draft past a score of around 70, a genuinely competitive first article, is closer to an hour of editing against the brief.

Where it breaks

Surfer sells a separate AI Search Analytics product alongside its original content-optimisation tiers, aimed at tracking visibility inside ChatGPT and other AI answer engines rather than Google search — it's priced and positioned independently, not as an add-on to Standard or Pro, so check which problem you're actually trying to solve before picking a plan.

Browser dashboard plus a WordPress plugin and a Google Docs add-on so the optimisation checklist follows you into your actual writing tool.

First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.

When not to use it

Not for anyone wanting to try the Content Editor without handing over a card, since Surfer's only card-free option is the AI visibility audit, not the optimisation tool people actually buy it for. Also a weak fit for a genuinely novel angle, since a brief built from what's already ranking pulls a draft towards what the top pages already say.

Surfer SEO’s core trick hasn’t changed much since it launched: it scrapes the pages currently ranking for a keyword, works out the terms, headings and structure they share, and turns that into a concrete content brief — this many words, these subheadings, these related terms — instead of the vague “write good content” advice most SEO tools give. The newer AI layer takes it a step further and drafts the article against that brief, so you’re editing rather than starting from a blank page.

It doesn’t publish on your behalf by default, but the WordPress and Google Docs integrations mean a finished draft can move into your actual publishing workflow without much manual copying, once you’re comfortable with the output.

The two products bundled under one name

Surfer now sells its original content-optimisation tiers alongside a separate AI Search Analytics product tracking whether your brand gets mentioned inside ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews — a genuinely different problem from ranking a page in classic search results. A team focused purely on traditional SEO should look at Discovery through Pro; one worried about AI-answer visibility specifically needs the separate Analytics tier, and probably both if AI search traffic already matters to their business.

Against the alternatives

There isn’t a close analogue elsewhere in this directory — most AI writing tools generate content without grounding it in what’s actually ranking, which is Surfer’s whole differentiator. The trade-off is that Surfer optimises for what already works, which can flatten genuinely novel angles into whatever the top-ranking pages already say; use its brief as a floor to hit, not a ceiling on what the piece should say.
