Where it breaks

Cognition, which acquired Windsurf in 2025, renamed and merged the editor into its Devin product family as 'Devin Desktop' in June 2026 — windsurf.com and codeium.com now both redirect to devin.ai. Existing accounts, plans and keybindings carried over automatically, and the pricing above is current for Devin Desktop; the Windsurf name persists mainly in search results and older reviews rather than on the live product.

First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.

Anyone searching for “Windsurf” in late 2026 will land on a product called Devin Desktop instead — Cognition folded its Windsurf acquisition into the Devin brand mid-year, unifying Devin Cloud, Devin Desktop, Devin CLI and Devin Review under one name and one pricing ladder. The underlying editor is the same one Windsurf users had: an AI-first coding environment where you describe a change and an agent plans it, edits the relevant files, and shows you a diff to review.

The free tier is a real trial rather than a teaser — light quotas, but full access to inline edits and tab completion. Pro at $20 a month is the tier most individual developers land on, and it’s where frontier model access (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini) opens up rather than being locked to one vendor’s models.

What “agent plans and executes” means in practice

Unlike a plain autocomplete tool, the agent here can touch multiple files in one instruction — rename a function and update every call site, or scaffold a new feature across a component and its test. You still review the diff before it lands; it doesn’t merge to your branch unsupervised the way a fully autonomous cloud agent would.

Against the alternatives

Against OpenAI Codex, the difference is where the work happens: Codex runs a task in its own cloud sandbox and comes back with a finished pull request, while Devin Desktop (Windsurf) sits inside your local editor and works alongside you turn by turn. Pick the cloud-sandbox model for tasks you’re comfortable delegating entirely; pick the in-editor model for anything you want to steer as it happens.

If you’re specifically looking for the product once called Windsurf, expect the rebrand rather than a dead link — the editor, your account and your plan are all still there under the new name.
