What you'd use it for

Getting a straight, page-cited answer out of a contract, report or long PDF without reading the whole thing yourself.

  • Ask a question about a PDF, Word file or presentation and get an answer with the page number it came from
  • Generate a one-click summary that pulls out the key points of a long document
  • Chat across every file added to a PDF Space, not just one document at a time
  • Draft a first pass at an email, brief or talking points grounded in the document's content
  • Get suggested starter questions the moment a document opens, so you're not staring at a blank prompt

The verdict

Good at exactly one thing — grounded answers about a specific PDF with a page citation you can check — and it does that reliably because it stays inside the document instead of reasoning past it. The cost is not the subscription, it's the tier trap — Standard and Pro both look like the sensible middle option and neither includes AI Assistant, so budgeting for it means comparing Express against Studio, not moving up the list. It suits someone who already lives in Acrobat for contracts, reports or forms and wants answers with a citation attached, not someone shopping for a general-purpose chat tool that happens to read PDFs.

What it costs

What you need to start

  • An Adobe ID and a named-user Acrobat licence (AI Assistant doesn't work on a shared or anonymous sign-in)
  • Acrobat Express or Studio, or the $1.99/month AI Assistant add-on on another tier
  • An internet connection — none of the AI features work offline
  • Acrobat's interface language set to one of the supported languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese or Japanese)

A few minutes once you're signed into a plan that actually includes it — the real time cost is upstream, working out which tier that is.

Your first run Open a PDF, click the AI Assistant icon in the toolbar, and a generative summary appears within seconds along with suggested questions — the first cited answer to something you actually asked takes another minute or two of typing.

Where it breaks

The AI Assistant is not included in every tier by name alone — Standard and Pro both exclude it despite sitting between Express and Studio in price, and require either a $1.99/month add-on or an upgrade to Studio. It is easy to buy the wrong tier expecting AI features that aren't there.

Browser, desktop (Windows/Mac) and mobile apps. Business tiers exist for each individual tier above, priced roughly $2 higher per seat per month and adding an admin console and 24/7 support.

First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.

When not to use it

Not for someone who wants one AI subscription that also drafts, codes and browses — Acrobat AI Assistant only works inside documents you've opened in it. Not for someone on Standard or Pro assuming AI comes with the higher-priced editing tiers; it does not, and the fix costs an extra $1.99/month or a jump to Studio.

Acrobat’s AI Assistant does something narrower and more reliable than a general chat tool asked to summarise a PDF you pasted in: it works from the actual document, with page-level citations back to where each answer came from, which matters the moment someone asks “where in the contract does it say that.”

The tier structure is where this gets genuinely confusing. Express, the cheapest paid tier, includes the AI Assistant. Standard and Pro, both more expensive and offering deeper editing tools, do not — you would reasonably assume AI comes bundled as you pay more, and here it does not. Studio, the most expensive individual tier, brings it back along with a design toolset borrowed from Adobe Express.

Buy by capability, not by tier name

If the AI Assistant is the reason you’re paying at all, the tier to compare is Express against Studio — Standard and Pro exist for editing depth without AI, and adding the AI Assistant to either afterward costs an extra $1.99 a month rather than switching tiers outright.

Where it fits

Against a general assistant like Claude or ChatGPT, the advantage here is narrower scope done more reliably: the answer is grounded in the specific PDF, with a citation, rather than in whatever context happened to fit in a chat window.
