What you'd use it for

Finding out why a competitor outranks you in Google, and increasingly, whether AI answer engines mention your brand at all.

  • See which pages link to a competitor's site and judge which of those links you could realistically earn
  • Find search terms a competitor ranks for that you do not, ranked by estimated traffic
  • Track how often ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention your brand for a set of prompts
  • Run a full technical site audit that flags broken links, slow pages and crawl errors
  • Pull ranking, traffic and backlink data into your own reports via API or MCP

The verdict

Ahrefs is the safer default for backlink and competitive-keyword research — its link index is the reason people trust the tool, and Site Explorer alone justifies the Lite tier for a single site. AI-prompt tracking is a genuine extension of the same keyword-tracking discipline, not a bolt-on. The real cost is that a serious subscription runs $129 to $449 a month before add-on users, and the entry-level Lite plan withholds Content Explorer, Portfolios and Batch Analysis entirely, so a team doing more than backlink checks and rank tracking gets pushed toward Standard sooner than the pricing cards suggest.

What you need to start

  • A domain you can verify ownership of, to use the free plan's Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics tools
  • A paid plan starting at $129/month for competitor research beyond your own verified sites

A few minutes to create a free account and verify a site; the first full crawl of that site takes roughly one to three hours depending on its size.

Your first run Add a project and Ahrefs starts crawling immediately — a small site's first crawl finishes within an hour or so, after which Site Explorer and Site Audit show your first backlink and technical-SEO data.

Where it breaks

Ahrefs runs several overlapping product lines on one pricing page — the main Lite-through-Enterprise ladder above, a cheaper Starter plan, and a separate Brand Radar AI subscription — and it is easy to compare the wrong two prices against each other. Confirm which product a quoted price refers to before budgeting.

Entirely browser-based. A separate, cheaper "Starter" plan at $29/month exists as a narrower product focused on competitive research and search volume rather than the full toolset above, and Ahrefs also sells a standalone Brand Radar AI product from around $199/month for tracking AI-answer citations.

First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.

When not to use it

Not for a single-site owner who only wants basic rank tracking and has no need for competitor-level backlink data — Ahrefs' own cheaper Starter plan or a lighter tool covers that. Not worth starting for anyone unwilling to verify site ownership just to use the free tier's tools.

Ahrefs built its name on backlink data — an index of who links to whom across the web, large and current enough that “why is my competitor outranking me” has an actual answer instead of a guess. Everything else in the product, from keyword research to the newer AI-prompt tracking, sits on top of that same crawl.

The genuinely new thing: tracking AI, not just Google

Alongside traditional rank tracking, Ahrefs now monitors how often AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews — mention your brand when someone asks a relevant question. That is a different discipline from classic SEO: you’re no longer optimising purely for a ranked list of blue links, but for whether an AI’s synthesised answer includes you at all. Ahrefs treats it as an extension of the same keyword-tracking muscle, which is a reasonable bet on how search behaviour is shifting.

Where the price actually goes

Lite is a real, usable tool for one site — its Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer reports are complete, not a stripped preview built to push an upgrade. The jump to Standard buys more than volume, though: it adds Content Explorer, Portfolios and Batch Analysis outright, none of which Lite includes at any project count, on top of the extra project slots and history depth. Advanced and Enterprise then layer on scale — more projects, more history, more tracked keywords — rather than further feature gates.

Against Semrush

The two are close enough on capability that industry preference often comes down to which interface a given team learned first. Semrush leans slightly more into broader marketing and brand intelligence; Ahrefs has historically had the reputation edge on link-index size and freshness. Either is a serious monthly cost — use the free tier or a short trial on both before committing to a year.
