Claude Code
A terminal-based agent that reads your whole project and makes changes across files on instruction, sold as part of a Claude subscription.
What you'd use it for
Getting a coded change made across an existing project from a plain-English instruction, without opening an editor or pasting files in one at a time.
- Ask what a codebase does or how it is structured and get a plain-English answer, without manually pointing it at files
- Describe a bug or a feature in plain English and get a multi-file code change implemented and tested
- Have it stage changes, write commit messages, create branches, and open pull requests directly
- Pipe command output or a diff straight into it from the terminal for one-off tasks, such as reviewing changed files for security issues
- Connect it to external tools over MCP -- Slack, Jira, Google Drive -- or run it unattended in CI via GitHub Actions or GitLab CI
The verdict
Claude Code is very good at the thing it is built for -- describing a change in plain English and having it work through an entire project rather than one pasted file at a time. It is not priced as its own product though -- what it costs depends entirely on which Claude plan or API account sits behind it, so working that out matters more here than with most tools. It suits someone already comfortable in a terminal who wants an agent working across a whole repository; someone who wants suggestions appearing inline as they type is better served by an editor-based tool like Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
What it costs
| Tier | Price | For | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $17/month billed annually ($200 up front), or $20/month billed monthly | Short coding sprints in a small codebase. | Claude Code access alongside chat, Cowork, projects, and research. |
| Max 5x | $100/month | Everyday use in a larger codebase. | A 5x usage multiplier over Pro. |
| Max 20x | $200/month | Power users wanting the most access to Claude models. | A 20x usage multiplier over Pro. |
| Console / API | Pay-as-you-go at standard API rates (for example, $8/$40 per million tokens in fast mode) | Usage billed by consumption rather than a fixed seat. | The same Claude Code binary, billed per token through an Anthropic Console account. |
| Team / Enterprise | Contact sales | Organisations wanting Claude Code under a managed, centrally billed seat. | Claude Code access bundled into a Team or Enterprise Claude plan. |

What you need to start
- A Claude Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console account -- the free claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code
- A terminal, on macOS 13 or later, Windows 10 1809 or later, or a supported Linux distribution
- An internet connection, from one of Anthropic's supported countries
A few minutes from the install command to a first working change, per Anthropic's own quickstart; getting real value on a large codebase -- a CLAUDE.md file, permission settings, MCP connections -- takes an afternoon rather than minutes.
Your first run The install script and a browser login take a few minutes; the quickstart then has you ask it to explain the codebase and make a small first edit -- Anthropic frames the whole thing as a few minutes from install to a working first change.
Where it breaks
Claude Code is not a separately priced product — it rides on whichever Claude plan or API account you already have, so its real cost depends entirely on which one that is. The Console/API route bills by token rather than by seat, which suits sporadic use and penalises constant use compared to a flat Pro or Max subscription.
A command-line tool, installed locally, that reads and edits files in the project directory it is pointed at — it can also run headlessly in CI rather than only in an interactive terminal session.

When not to use it
Not for someone without an existing codebase or without at least basic comfort in a terminal -- there is no graphical interface, and the value depends entirely on already having a folder of code to point it at. Also not for someone who wants a single, predictable monthly price, since what it costs rides on whichever underlying Claude plan or API account is doing the billing.
Claude Code is marketed at developers and is genuinely useful to anyone with a folder full of files that need the same operation applied to all of them — renamed, reformatted, restructured, or built from a description. It lives in a terminal rather than a chat window, which sounds like a higher bar than it is: you describe what you want in a sentence, the same way you would to Claude’s desktop app, and it works through the project itself rather than asking you to paste files in one at a time.
There is no separate Claude Code subscription. It is a capability that ships with the Claude plan you already have — Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise — or with a pay-per-token Console account for occasional, unpredictable use. That makes the pricing table above slightly unusual: you are not choosing a Claude Code plan, you are choosing a Claude plan and getting Claude Code as part of it.
Console versus a subscription
The Console/API route bills strictly by token, which is the right call for a workflow that runs Claude Code occasionally — once a week, say — and the wrong call for someone who wants it open all day. A flat Max subscription becomes cheaper the moment usage is constant rather than sporadic.
Where it fits
Against Cursor and GitHub Copilot, Claude Code is the terminal-first option — no editor to switch into, well suited to someone who is already comfortable typing commands and wants the agent to work across a whole repository rather than inline as they type.
Alternatives
Cursor
A code editor where you describe the change you want in plain English and it edits the files directly, used by non-developers for small internal tools.
GitHub Copilot
Writes and reviews code alongside you inside the editor, and can now be assigned a whole GitHub issue to work through as an agent.
OpenAI Codex
A cloud coding agent that takes a task, works in its own sandbox without supervision, and comes back with a finished pull request for you to review.
Windsurf
An AI coding editor where an agent plans and makes multi-file changes to your codebase from a prompt, now shipped under the name Devin Desktop.
