Where it breaks

Most help-desk AI drafts a reply and waits for a human to hit send. Gorgias’s AI agent goes further on the plans built for it: it can look up an order, check a refund policy, and issue the refund itself, closing the loop without a person in the middle. That is what most “AI-powered support” tools describe in their marketing and few actually reach.
The pricing model reflects an ecommerce brand’s real shape: it is priced on ticket volume with per-ticket overage, not seats, because a support team’s cost scales with order volume and returns season, not headcount. The automated-interaction counts baked into each tier — 30 on Starter and Basic, rising to 530 on Advanced — are the AI agent’s own budget, separate from the ticket count a human agent handles.
Against Intercom Fin or Tidio, the differentiator is depth of commerce integration rather than raw chat quality: Gorgias reads order status, shipping, and refund eligibility natively because it was built store-first, for Shopify above all. A general-purpose support AI can answer a policy question convincingly; fewer of them can actually process the refund without a plugin doing the real work underneath.
What it does not do is replace judgment calls — a return outside policy, an angry customer, anything ambiguous still routes to a person. The automation earns its keep on the volume of tickets that are genuinely routine, which for most ecommerce brands is most of them.
