Where it breaks

Browser and mobile app (iOS/Android). Runs in the background once an Applet is turned on — nothing needs to stay open on your device.

First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.

IFTTT predates almost everything else in this directory — it launched in 2011, long before “automation” got reframed as an AI category, and it is worth understanding as the ancestor of tools like Zapier and Make rather than a competitor to them.

The model is deliberately narrow: one trigger, one action, no branching logic. A new email with an attachment saves the file to Drive. A calendar event turns on the porch light. That narrowness is the whole product — it means Applets are things a non-technical person can build in about a minute, at the cost of anything that needs a condition, a filter, or more than two steps.

Where it actually fits a business

IFTTT is squarely a consumer automation tool that happens to have business use cases at its edges — social media cross-posting, simple lead capture, smart-office triggers. It was not built for CRM logic or multi-branch workflows, and pushing it there is the wrong tool for the job.

Against the alternatives

Against Make or Zapier, the honest comparison is depth: both handle branching, filters, and dozens of steps in one workflow, which IFTTT’s one-trigger-one-action model cannot do at all. Reach for IFTTT when the automation really is that simple and you don’t want to learn a workflow builder to get it. Reach for Make the moment the automation needs an “if” beyond the one in the name.
