Retool
Assembles internal admin tools and dashboards directly over your existing databases, with AI able to generate the interface from a description instead of you dragging every component by hand.
What you'd use it for
Building an internal admin panel or ops dashboard that reads and writes to your real production database, without building and hosting a custom web app from scratch.
- Generate a working first draft of an app - a table, a form, a dashboard - from a plain-English prompt
- Connect directly to production databases (Postgres, MySQL, Snowflake and others) and REST or GraphQL APIs as data sources
- Drag prebuilt components onto a canvas - tables, forms, charts, buttons - and wire each one to a query
- Automate scheduled jobs, alerts and ETL-style tasks as workflows separate from any app
- Build and ship native mobile apps for iOS and Android from the same editor
The verdict
Retool earns its place when you have a real database or API and need an internal tool that touches it directly - the AI draft gets you a working table-and-form app fast, and the component model holds up once a developer takes over the non-standard parts. It is not cheap once you count builders, internal users, AI credits and workflow runs as separate meters, and a small team can find the seat-plus-usage math adds up faster than the tier price suggests. Best suited to teams with an engineer on hand to finish what the AI starts, not to someone wanting a finished client-facing product straight out of the box.
What it costs
| Tier | Price | For | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/month | Developers exploring the tool or building a first internal app. | 250 AI credits a month, unlimited apps for a small number of builder and end users. |
| Team | $10/month per builder, plus $5/month per internal user | Growing teams collaborating on internal tools. | 1,000 AI credits a month (750 base plus 250 bonus), shared app editing. |
| Business | $50/month per builder, plus $15/month per internal user | Teams who need more control — permissions, audit logs, SSO. | 3,000 AI credits a month (1,500 base plus 1,500 bonus), tiered pricing on external (non-employee) users. |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | Organisations running Retool as a platform across many teams. | Flexible, negotiated pricing that scales with usage; full SSO and RBAC. |

What you need to start
- A database or API you're willing to connect it to - there's nothing to build against otherwise
- An account (free sign-up, no credit card required for the free tier)
- The Business plan or above if you need SSO or audit logs
A few minutes to a free account and a first AI-drafted app; realistically a working day or more to connect real data sources, set permissions correctly and publish something you'd trust your team to use.
Your first run Signing up takes a couple of minutes with no card needed, and a prompt describing the app you want - a support console, a deal-approval tool - gets you a first working draft with tables and queries already wired to a connected data source within minutes. Turning that draft into something you'd actually publish to your team takes longer.
Where it breaks
Retool's pricing page uses odometer-style animated digits for its figures, which made the base per-builder and per-internal-user numbers harder to confirm cleanly than a static price. The figures above matched consistently across two independent reads of the page. Additional charges apply for workflow runs (about $75 per 5,000 runs/month past the included allowance) and external (non-employee) users, tiered from $8 down to $4/month depending on volume — those are not included in the headline price above.
Cloud-hosted or self-hosted. Retool apps run in the browser and connect directly to your production or staging databases and APIs.

When not to use it
Anyone without their own database or API has nothing for Retool to connect to, so there's no reason to start here. Teams wanting a public, client-facing portal rather than an internal tool are better served by something like Softr; and solo operators wary of stacking builder seats, internal-user seats, AI credits and workflow runs on top of each other should budget carefully before committing.
Retool’s premise is that most internal tools — an admin panel, an ops dashboard, a form that writes to a database — are structurally similar enough that they shouldn’t take an engineer a week each. You connect it to your database or API, drag together a UI from prebuilt components, and get something your team can actually use, without building and maintaining a custom web app from scratch.
The AI addition lets you describe the app you want and get a working first draft, which is a real time-saver for the boilerplate parts — a table with filters, a form with validation — though anything non-standard still needs a developer’s hand on the result.
What the pricing actually charges for
Retool splits cost between builders (people editing apps) and end users (people just using them), and adds AI credits and workflow-run allowances as separate consumption meters on top of the seat price. That means the sticker price per tier understates real cost for any team running workflows or heavy AI generation regularly — budget for the add-on usage, not just the seat count.
Where it fits next to the alternatives
Against Softr, the split is technical depth: Softr builds simpler client-facing portals fast on top of Airtable or Sheets, while Retool is built for connecting directly to a real production database and handling more complex internal logic.
Alternatives
Softr
Builds client portals and internal tools directly on top of an Airtable base or Google Sheet, without writing code.
Noloco
A no-code builder for client portals and internal tools that reads directly from Airtable, Google Sheets or a database, with AI generating the first layout for you.
Google AppSheet
Turns a Google Sheet or database into a working mobile app for field teams, with no code required to build it.
Microsoft Power Apps
A Microsoft tool for building internal business apps — forms, approvals, dashboards — on top of data you likely already keep in Microsoft 365 or SharePoint.
