- Dictate text by speaking instead of typing, on desktop or mobile
- Ask the built-in voice assistant questions about what you're reading and get a summary back
The verdict
Speechify is a straightforward text-to-speech tool: it does one thing well on the Premium tier - turning written material into something natural-sounding you can listen to at speed. The free tier's robotic voices make it hard to recommend for extended listening, so the real cost is the $29/month subscription, which also bundles a podcast generator and voice-typing dictation you may not want. It suits people with a genuine backlog of documents, PDFs or articles to get through hands-free; it is not a research or reasoning tool.
What it costs

|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/month | Someone who wants basic text-to-speech without paying anything. | Listening at up to 1.5x speed, access anywhere, 10 robotic voices, text-to-speech only. |

What you need to start
- A Speechify account (email or Google/Apple sign-in)
- A credit card if you start the Premium free trial - the permanent Free plan needs none
A couple of minutes to a working free account and your first document read aloud; the 3-day Premium trial needs a card on file and auto-renews into an annual plan if not cancelled in time.
Your first run Paste a paragraph of text or upload a PDF in the web app, pick a voice and hit play - you're listening within a couple of minutes, no setup beyond signing up.
Where it breaks
Speechify advertises up to 60% savings on annual billing but does not display the actual annual dollar figure on the pricing page — only the monthly price above is confirmed.

When not to use it
Not for anyone expecting it to summarise, analyse or write - it reads what already exists rather than generating insight from it. Also a poor fit if you only occasionally need something read aloud, since the natural voices that make listening tolerable sit behind a $29/month plan whose free trial requires a card on file.
Speechify’s core job is turning text you’d otherwise have to sit and read into something you listen to instead — a long email, a PDF report, a web article — at up to 5x speed on the paid tier. For anyone who processes a lot of written material during commutes, workouts, or other hands-busy time, that’s a genuine hour-reclaiming feature rather than a novelty.
The free tier is real but limited to robotic-sounding voices, which most people find hard to listen to for long stretches. The jump to Premium buys natural voices — the difference between “tolerable for a quick memo” and “pleasant enough to listen to for an hour.”
What Premium actually adds beyond voice quality
Past the obvious upgrade — natural voices instead of robotic ones — Premium adds two features worth knowing about separately: an AI podcast generator (turning written content into a produced-sounding audio piece) and voice typing for dictation, which is really a different product bundled into the same subscription. If you only want the reading feature, you’re still paying for both.
Where it fits
This isn’t a competitor to ChatGPT or Claude — it doesn’t generate or reason about text, it reads what already exists aloud. Think of it as sitting downstream of whatever wrote the document: draft with an assistant, then listen back with Speechify if reading it on screen isn’t the way you want to review it.
