What you'd use it for
Turning a written script into a natural-sounding voiceover, including a synthetic clone of your own voice, without hiring a voice actor or booking a studio.
- Convert written text into natural-sounding speech in 30+ languages
- Clone your own voice from a 1-2 minute sample for quick reuse, or train a professional clone from 30-180 minutes of audio for a near-indistinguishable result
- Transcribe spoken audio back into text
- Generate sound effects from a text description
- Design an entirely new voice from a text prompt instead of cloning an existing one
The verdict
ElevenLabs is the layer a lot of other tools quietly sit on top of, because the voice quality clears the bar that matters — a listener would not flag it as synthetic — at a price low enough for a small business to just buy it outright. The free tier is only good for judging that quality, since commercial rights and voice cloning both stay locked until Starter at $6 a month, and the real cost to plan around is not the subscription but the credit system, which nobody can translate into finished minutes until the first real month runs. It suits anyone who needs voiceover as a recurring input into something else, a video, an IVR line, a workflow tool, more than someone after a single one-off narration, where a freelance voice actor hired once might genuinely cost less thought.

What you need to start
- A free account (email or Google sign-up) — no credit card needed for the free tier
- A script to convert, or a 1-2 minute recording of your own voice to clone it
A few minutes to a free account and a first stock-voice clip. A professional-grade clone of your own voice needs 30-180 minutes of recorded audio plus identity verification before it trains.
Your first run Sign up free, paste a script into the dashboard, and ElevenLabs returns a finished voiceover in a stock voice within seconds. Cloning your own voice for instant use adds one step, a 1-2 minute recording, before you have a voice to reuse.
Where it breaks
The Creator tier's first month is discounted to roughly half the listed price; the figure above is the ongoing monthly rate. Every tier's real limit is the monthly credit allowance, not a simple minute count — how far it stretches depends on the voice model and audio quality you choose.
Browser-based, with an API and SDKs for embedding into other software. There is no desktop app — you work in a tab or through code.

When not to use it
Not for cloning a voice that is not your own without that person's clear, written consent, and not for skipping disclosure once you have it. ElevenLabs verifies identity for a Professional Voice Clone but not for instant cloning, so the consent and disclosure obligations — and they vary by jurisdiction — sit with whoever presses record and whoever publishes the result, not with the platform. Not for a single one-off narration either, since a recurring subscription for commercial rights is a poor trade against hiring a voice actor once. And not for anyone who needs the voiceover to appear on a schedule with no one at the keyboard, since this only ever gives you a script in and a file out.
ElevenLabs does one thing and does it well enough that it became the default answer to “what generates the voiceover”: feed it a script, pick a voice — stock or your own, cloned from a short sample — and it hands back audio a listener would not flag as synthetic.
The free tier is generous enough to judge quality on, but it withholds the one feature most businesses actually want: a commercial license. That arrives at Starter, $6 a month, which is also where instant voice cloning switches on. Everything above that is really about volume and audio fidelity rather than new capability — more monthly credits, higher-resolution output over the API, more seats.
What the credits actually buy
Credits are not minutes. A short clip in a standard voice costs little; a long one in a premium or professional-cloned voice costs more. The practical effect is that nobody can tell you in advance exactly how many minutes of finished audio a plan buys — you find out during the first real month, the same way you would with Make’s credit-based pricing.
Where it fits and where it stops
ElevenLabs is a tool you actively drive: you supply the script, you download the file, you take it somewhere else — a video edit, a podcast feed, an IVR system. It does not run on a schedule and does not watch an inbox. If the plan is to generate voiceover automatically whenever new content is published, that scheduling has to live somewhere else, most commonly a workflow tool wired to ElevenLabs’ API rather than the web app itself.
Alternatives
WellSaid Labs
A voiceover studio built on licensed, consented voice actors, so the audio you publish for ads or training is cleared for commercial use.
Resemble AI
Clones a voice from a short audio sample for generated speech, and separately detects whether audio, image or video content is a deepfake.
Speechify
Reads documents, emails and web pages aloud in natural-sounding voices, and can also generate voiceovers for you.
Descript
Edit video and podcasts by editing the transcript — delete a word from the text and the matching footage or audio disappears with it.
