Where it breaks
Browser dashboard, priced per seat rather than per profile — a five-person team pays for five seats regardless of how many social accounts they manage between them.
First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.
Sprout Social’s grid view — every channel’s inbox pulled into one shared queue — is the thing that makes it feel like enterprise software rather than a scheduler with extra tabs. A support team and a marketing team can work the same inbox without either seeing the other’s noise, which matters once a company has enough social volume that one person can no longer eyeball every channel separately.
The AI layer works two angles: it drafts replies to incoming messages so an agent is editing rather than starting from a blank box, and it summarises sentiment across a listening stream so a team can see “what people are saying about us this week” without reading every mention by hand. Neither happens without a human approving the send — the automation is in the assembly, not the publishing.
Scheduled posts do run on their own once set, which is what separates this from a pure drafting assistant — but the reporting and listening tools are where the real depth sits, and where the price separates it from lighter tools like Buffer or Later. Per-seat pricing also changes the maths: a small team pays close to what Essentials costs on a lighter tool, but the price climbs fast per person added, which rewards concentrating social work in fewer hands rather than spreading it thin.
Choose Sprout over a scheduler when listening and cross-team reporting are the actual job, not just getting posts out the door.
