Where it breaks
Browser-based, with a fast, keyboard-driven interface that reviewers frequently compare to Notion or Linear rather than a traditional CRM.
First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.
Every CRM promises to save you data entry, and almost none of them deliver — the record still ends up half-empty until someone manually fills it in after a call. Attio’s difference is that it syncs your actual inbox and calendar in real time and lets AI enrichment fill in company details, so a contact record often has useful information in it before you’ve typed anything.
That auto-population is also what separates it from a passive database: it’s continuously pulling from your email and calendar in the background, not waiting for you to ask. Whether that’s a feature or a privacy concern depends on how comfortable your team is with a CRM reading connected inboxes automatically — worth discussing with anyone whose email gets connected before you roll it out.
Who’s actually building on it
Attio was built for startups that outgrew a spreadsheet and found HubSpot too heavy and too expensive for what they actually needed. The free tier, capped at 3 seats, is genuinely usable rather than a stripped trial, which is unusual for a CRM this modern-feeling.
Against the alternatives
Against Freshsales, the difference is setup philosophy: Freshsales is a more traditional CRM you configure by hand, while Attio tries to build the record for you from data you already generate elsewhere. Against Close, Close is built around phone-first outbound sales with calling and dialing baked in; Attio is closer to a flexible relationship database that happens to be sales-shaped, better suited to a team whose relationships form through more varied channels than cold calling.
The reporting and permission controls only arrive at Pro, so a team that needs real access control from day one should budget past the Plus tier rather than assuming Free or Plus will scale with headcount.
