Canva
A design tool for people who are not designers — social posts, decks, flyers and print built from templates, with AI that writes copy, edits photos and resizes a finished design for every channel.
What you'd use it for
Turning a rough idea into a correctly sized, on-brand social post, deck or flyer without hiring a designer.
- Pick a template and swap in your own text, photos and colours for a social post, deck, flyer or printed document
- Ask Magic Write to draft or rewrite the caption or headline copy on a design
- Remove a photo's background or swap it out in one click
- Resize one finished design into every platform's dimensions automatically with Magic Switch
- Schedule the finished post straight to your connected social accounts on the Pro plan
The verdict
Canva earns its place because the login was already installed on most of the planet before the AI arrived, and features like Magic Write, background removal and one-click resizing are worth having rather than worth switching for. It is fast for volume work — the weekly post, the internal deck, the flyer due Thursday — and genuinely needs no design training. It is not a design system, and a template-derived look is visible up close to anyone who looks for it, so treat it as a production tool rather than a brand tool. Because pricing is per person per year, adding colleagues to a shared Business brand gets expensive quickly.

What you need to start
- A Canva account (email, Google or Facebook login), no credit card needed for the Free plan
- A modern browser (recent Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge), or macOS 12+ / Windows 10+ for the desktop app
- A card or PayPal on file only if you start a Pro free trial
A free account and your first template-based design take a few minutes; starting a Pro free trial needs payment details up front even though nothing is charged until it ends.
Your first run Signing up gets you straight into an editable template, and swapping in your own text, photos and colours to a first finished, downloadable design typically takes a few minutes.
Where it breaks
Canva prices annually per person, so the headline figures are a year's commitment rather than a monthly one, and the per-person structure means adding one colleague to one shared brand doubles the bill. AI use is metered as an allowance rather than sold outright, and the largest allowance sits behind a separate AI Pass add-on that is not included in the figures above. Exported files are flattened, so a designer picking the work up later is rebuilding it, not editing it.
Browser-first, with macOS, Windows, iOS and Android apps. Everything syncs through Canva's cloud, so the desktop app is a convenience rather than a different product.

When not to use it
Not for anyone whose brand is the actual product — a designer, and eventually your customers, will notice the template underneath. Also a weak fit for a growing team, since Business is priced per seat per year rather than as a shared workspace, and exported files are flattened, so a designer inheriting the work later is rebuilding it from scratch.
The reason Canva sits this high in a list of AI tools is not the AI. It is that several hundred million people already had a login, and the AI arrived inside a tool they were not going to abandon.
That matters more than it sounds. The practical bottleneck in small-business marketing is rarely the idea; it is the forty minutes between having the idea and having a correctly sized image with the right logo on it. Canva removes those forty minutes for someone with no design training, and the AI features — writing the caption, removing a background, resizing one design into eight formats — remove most of what was left.
What it is not
It is not a substitute for a designer on anything where the brand is the product. Template-derived work looks template-derived, and the tell is visible to your customers even when it is invisible to you. Use it for volume: the weekly posts, the internal deck, the price list, the thing that has to exist by Thursday.
Where it sits on the ladder
Canva is a place you sit and work, not something that runs without you. Scheduling posts on Pro is the closest it comes to acting on its own, and even that needs you to make the thing first.
If you want a finished deck out of a one-line prompt rather than a template to fill in, Gamma is the narrower tool. If the job is short video for TikTok and Reels, CapCut was built for exactly that and Canva was not.
