What you'd use it for

Turning raw footage or a long recording into a captioned, platform-ready short video without hiring an editor.

  • Generate captions automatically from spoken audio and edit them inline
  • Remove a background without a green screen
  • Cut a long recording down to a short highlight reel with AI-assisted trimming
  • Apply templates, filters and text effects sized to each platform's aspect ratio
  • Sync a project across desktop, mobile and browser through the CapCut cloud on Pro

The verdict

CapCut is the fastest route from a recording to a postable short video, and the free tier is capable enough that it does not feel like a trial. It costs almost nothing in setup time, but the templates are the same ones everyone else on CapCut is using, so leaning on them is also how a lot of small-business content ends up looking identical. It is owned by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, which explains why it fits TikTok's formats so precisely and why some businesses will weigh the ownership question before running customer or staff footage through it. Best suited to someone who needs to publish short video on a regular cadence and does not need production value to be the message.

What you need to start

  • A free CapCut account — email, Google, TikTok, Facebook or QR sign-up, no credit card
  • Windows 10 64-bit or later, or macOS, for the desktop app (Online and mobile versions are also available)
  • About 10GB of free disk space for the desktop install
  • A Pro subscription (from $9.99/month) for premium templates, effects and 100GB of cloud storage

A few minutes to a free account with no credit card required; the desktop app then needs about 10GB of free disk space and a download before you can start editing.

Your first run Import a clip, run auto captions on it and drop it into a template sized for the platform you need — a straightforward clip goes from raw footage to an exported, captioned video in minutes rather than a full editing session.

Where it breaks

CapCut does not publish one price. The figures above are the "from" rates shown on the subscription page; the vendor's own help articles state repeatedly that pricing varies by region, platform and promotion, and the Teams price is not published at all. Templates are the fastest route to a finished video and also the reason a lot of small-business content looks identical. Ownership by ByteDance is a governance consideration for some businesses, particularly where footage includes customers or staff.

Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and a browser version. Projects sync through CapCut's cloud on Pro. CapCut is owned by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, which is why the templates and aspect ratios match TikTok's conventions so exactly.

When not to use it

Anyone who needs footage to look distinct rather than templated, since the fastest CapCut workflows are also the most recognisable ones. Businesses uneasy about ByteDance holding footage of identifiable customers or staff should treat that as a real due-diligence question, not an afterthought. Anyone whose video needs to carry the message through production value alone should hire a videographer instead — this is an editing tool, not a substitute for one.

Short video is where a great deal of small-business attention now gets won, and the gap between filming something and publishing something is almost entirely captions, trimming and aspect ratio. CapCut closes that gap faster than anything else at this price.

The AI parts are unglamorous and are exactly the right ones. Automatic captions that are accurate enough to only need a glance. Background removal without a green screen. Trimming a twenty-minute recording into the sixty seconds worth posting. None of it is impressive on its own; together it turns an hour of editing into ten minutes.

Why it is free enough to be suspicious of

The free tier is unusually capable because CapCut exists to feed TikTok, and both belong to ByteDance. That alignment is also the reason the templates fit TikTok’s formats perfectly and the reason some businesses will not use it at all. If your footage includes identifiable customers or staff, take the ownership question seriously before you build a workflow on it.

What you should not expect

It is not a substitute for a videographer on anything where production value is the message. And it is a tool you sit and operate, not something that produces content while you are elsewhere.

For static design and the rest of the social calendar, Canva covers the same audience and overlaps on captions and resizing. Most people producing short video end up with both.
