DocuSign
Legally binding e-signature for contracts and forms, with AI that reads an incoming agreement and flags its obligations, dates and unusual clauses.
What you'd use it for
Getting a contract or form legally signed without printing anything, and having the AI flag a renewal date or unusual clause in an incoming agreement before you commit to it.
- Upload a document, drag signature and date fields onto it, and send it out for signature in a few minutes
- Ask the AI to pull renewal dates, payment terms and obligations out of an incoming contract without reading the whole thing first
- Track every envelope's status — sent, viewed, signed — against a timestamped audit trail
- Collect a payment inside the same envelope a signature is collected in, on Business Pro and above
- Send the same agreement to a whole list of recipients at once with bulk send, on Business Pro and above
The verdict
DocuSign is the safe, unglamorous default for e-signature, and the AI reading feature is a genuine step beyond simply collecting a signature. What it costs you in practice is less the subscription than the volume cap most people miss — Standard and Business Pro both limit sending to around 100 envelopes per user a year on the annual plans, so the jump from one to the other buys payment collection and bulk send, not more room to send. It suits a business signing enough vendor and client agreements that the audit trail and the AI-read obligations earn their keep; a business signing the occasional NDA is paying for capacity it will never use.
What it costs
| Tier | Price | For | Includes |

What you need to start
- A DocuSign account (name, email and country; no credit card needed for the 14-day free trial)
- A current-release browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge) — beta or outdated versions are not supported
- A document to send and each recipient's email address
A couple of minutes to create the account; DocuSign's own getting-started guide has a first envelope sent within about five minutes of that.
Your first run Upload a document, add a recipient's email, drag signature and date fields onto it, and send — DocuSign's own walkthrough has a first envelope out the door in about five minutes.
Where it breaks
DocuSign also sells no-commitment monthly-only variants of Standard and Business Pro at higher per-month prices ($15 and $40 respectively for a lighter version, up to $65 for the fullest one) alongside the annual-commitment tiers listed above — the pricing page mixes both families together, and it is easy to read the wrong row. SMS delivery to signers is billed separately, starting around $0.40 per delivery.
Browser-based, with mobile apps for iOS and Android. No desktop app of any real substance — signing and sending both happen in a browser tab or a phone.

When not to use it
Not for someone who signs a handful of documents a year — the e-signature tool already bundled into a document suite they are paying for anyway covers that without a separate subscription. Not for someone assuming Business Pro's higher price buys more sending room than Standard; on the annual plans both cap out around the same 100 envelopes per user a year, and the extra spend buys features, not volume.
DocuSign built the category — “sign this on your phone” was a genuinely new idea once — and the AI layer added on top is trying to do the same thing again for the document itself, not just the signature.
The reading feature is the interesting part. Point it at an incoming contract and it extracts renewal dates, payment terms and obligations without anyone reading the whole thing line by line first. For a small business that signs vendor agreements and client contracts but has no legal team, that is the difference between finding out a contract auto-renewed and catching it three weeks before the deadline.
What you’re actually paying for at each tier
- Personal and Standard buy the signature workflow itself — sending, templates, an audit trail.
- Business Pro adds the fields that make a document do more than get signed: payment collection built into the envelope, bulk send to a list, conditional logic.
- Enterprise is a different product wearing the same name — Intelligent Agreement Management, which treats every signed contract as a record to be tracked, not just a completed task.
Against the alternative
The honest competitor for most small businesses is the free e-signature feature already bundled into a document suite they are paying for anyway, which covers “get a form signed” without a separate subscription. DocuSign earns its price when the volume of agreements is high enough, or the stakes of missing an obligation are high enough, that the reading feature pays for itself.
