What you'd use it for

Recording a screen walkthrough once and sending the link instead of scheduling a live meeting to explain it.

  • Record your screen, camera, or both with narration and get a shareable link within minutes
  • Auto-generate a title, summary and chapter markers for a recording on the Business + AI tier
  • Turn a recorded walkthrough into written meeting notes without a separate notetaking tool
  • Cut filler words and dead air out of a recording automatically
  • Transcribe a recording into any of 50+ languages

The verdict

Loom is built for recording a one-off explanation and sending it instead of booking a call — the async habit is the point, not the AI layer on top of it. The features people mean when they say "Loom does the summarising for me" sit behind the $24/user Business + AI tier, not the free plan or even the $18 Business plan. It suits teams that already explain things by screen-share and want fewer meetings, not teams looking for something to sit in on the meetings they're already having.

What you need to start

  • An email address or Google/Microsoft account to sign up, no credit card for the free tier
  • Windows 10 or macOS 12.3 (Monterey) or later for the desktop app
  • The Business + AI plan to get auto-titling, auto-summaries and auto-chapters

A few minutes to sign up and record a first video; the AI editing features only switch on once you upgrade to Business + AI.

Your first run Install the desktop app or Chrome extension, click record, walk through what you want to show, and you have a shareable link within a few minutes of stopping; on Business + AI, a title, summary and chapters appear once the upload finishes processing.

Where it breaks

Browser extension, desktop apps for Mac and Windows, and mobile apps. Acquired by Atlassian in 2023 and now integrates with Jira and Confluence.

When not to use it

Not for teams that want a tool to join and summarise live conversations — that's Fathom or Granola's job, not Loom's. And not for anyone trying to run on the free tier long-term: 25 videos and a 5-minute recording cap make Starter a trial run, not a lasting option.

Loom’s job is replacing a meeting that didn’t need to be live: instead of scheduling a call to walk someone through a bug, a design, or an update, you record your screen and voice once, send a link, and they watch it on their own time. It’s asynchronous by design, which is the entire value proposition — fewer calendar invites, more focused explanations that can be re-watched instead of half-remembered.

The free Starter tier is enough to see whether async video fits your team’s habits, though the 25-video cap and 5-minute recording limit push anyone using it regularly toward Business fairly quickly. The AI features — auto-titling, auto-chapters, auto-generated meeting notes — only arrive at the $24 Business + AI tier, which is the one most people actually mean when they say “Loom does the summarising for me.”

What the AI tier changes

Below Business + AI, Loom is a recording and hosting tool with solid transcription. At Business + AI, it starts editing on your behalf: cutting filler words and dead air automatically, generating chapter markers so a long walkthrough is skimmable, and turning a recorded meeting into written notes without a separate notetaking tool.

Against the alternatives

Against Fathom or Granola, the distinction is what’s being recorded: those tools capture a live conversation you’re already having, while Loom records you explaining something to a camera when nobody else is present yet. They’re complementary rather than competing — a team recording live meetings with Fathom and recording one-off explainers with Loom isn’t paying for the same thing twice.

The unlimited-length recording on the free tier is generous by category standards, but the 25-video cap means it functions more as a trial than a permanent free option for anyone using Loom as a regular communication habit rather than occasionally.
