SheetAI
A Google Sheets add-on that generates text, classifies rows, and fills gaps in a spreadsheet using an AI formula instead of copy-pasting from a chat window.
What you'd use it for
Cleaning, classifying or generating text for a column of spreadsheet data without leaving Google Sheets.
- Generate or rewrite text for a single cell, or drag one formula down an entire column
- Classify each row into a category you define, such as urgent, normal or low priority
- Fill gaps in a data range by learning the pattern from a few examples you have already filled in
- Translate or summarise a column of text in place
- Generate an image directly into a spreadsheet cell from a text description
The verdict
Genuinely useful for the one job it does — turning a repetitive row-by-row AI task into a formula that recalculates on its own. The free BYOK tier is not a bait tier, it is unlimited if you already hold a provider key, which makes the paid tiers a fair trade for not wanting to manage one. It has no ambition beyond the sheet, so anyone who wants scheduling, branching logic or a workflow that touches other apps will outgrow it fast.
What it costs
| Tier | Price | For | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) | $0 | Anyone comfortable connecting their own OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or Grok API key. | Unlimited SHEETAI calls, billed directly by your own AI provider rather than SheetAI. |
| Starter | $12/month | Light, occasional AI use in a spreadsheet without managing an API key. | No API key required, up to roughly 500 AI runs a month, AI formulas, email support. |
| Pro | $29/month, or $290/year | Heavier hosted use and bulk media processing inside a sheet. | Soft-unlimited hosted AI usage, bulk image, video and music processing, multi-model BYOK support, priority support. |
| Credit Packs | $29 to $299, one-time | A specific project needing a fixed amount of extra tokens without a subscription. | Token packs from roughly 97 million to 1 billion tokens. |

What you need to start
- A Google account with access to Google Sheets
- Either your own OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or Grok API key for the free BYOK tier, or a paid Starter or Pro subscription for hosted use with no key
About two minutes to install from the Google Workspace Marketplace and write a first formula; connecting your own API key for the free tier adds a few more minutes.
Your first run Install the add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a sheet, and write one SHEETAI formula referencing a cell of real data — the vendor cites a two-minute setup, and the first result appears as soon as a provider key or hosted plan is connected.
Where it breaks
Installs as a Google Sheets add-on. No standalone app — it only runs inside a spreadsheet you already have open in Google Sheets.

When not to use it
Anyone who needs the automation to run on a schedule or reach outside the spreadsheet — SheetAI only fires when a formula recalculates, so a nightly job or a multi-app workflow belongs in Make or Airtable instead. Also a poor fit for someone who already has a provider API key and just wants raw chat access, since a formula adds nothing over pasting into ChatGPT for a one-off task.
The gap SheetAI fills is small but genuinely annoying: you have a column of messy data in a spreadsheet, and the fix is obviously “ask an AI to clean this up,” but that means leaving the sheet, pasting rows into a chat window, and pasting the answer back. SheetAI turns that into a formula you write once and drag down a column.
That is the whole product, and it is worth more than it sounds. A formula like =SHEETAI(A2, "classify this as urgent, normal or low priority") runs on every row, recalculates when the data changes, and never leaves the spreadsheet. Compare that to running the same task through ChatGPT or Claude one row at a time.
The free tier is not a trial
Unusually, the free BYOK tier is not usage-limited at all — connect your own OpenAI or Claude API key and every call runs on your account, unlimited, forever. The paid tiers exist for people who would rather pay a flat monthly fee than manage an API key and watch a separate bill.
Where it stops
SheetAI acts when you write the formula and stops when the sheet stops changing — it does not run on a schedule or reach into other apps on its own. If you need a spreadsheet-adjacent workflow that runs unattended, Airtable automations or Make go further; this is a formula, not a pipeline.
Alternatives
Rows
A spreadsheet with live connectors to your other apps and an AI analyst built into the formula bar, so a formula can just be a question.
Airtable
A database that looks like a spreadsheet, with an API, forms, views and AI fields on top — the place most small businesses end up keeping the records an automation needs to read and write.
Make.com
A hosted place to build workflows that run on somebody else's servers — triggered by an event, on a schedule, or by a webhook — so the work happens whether or not your laptop is open.
ChatGPT
OpenAI's assistant in a browser tab, a desktop app and a phone app, where you ask questions, draft text, and hand it files or spreadsheets to work through.
