What you'd use it for

Running a team's day-to-day data in a spreadsheet-style interface backed by a real Postgres database you can query directly or take with you.

  • Ask questions about a table in plain English in AI Chat and get a chart back
  • Turn a base into a working web app from a text prompt, no separate builder tool
  • Add an AI field that classifies, summarises or extracts from other columns as rows update
  • Query the underlying tables with full SQL, or connect BI tools like Metabase and Power BI directly to the Postgres database
  • Import CSV or XLSX data and work in a grid that holds up past a million rows

The verdict

Teable earns a look the moment owning your data in real Postgres becomes an actual requirement rather than a preference, and the price backs that up, with a genuinely free tier and a Pro seat that costs a fraction of Airtable's equivalent. What it costs you is maturity, since there are fewer third-party integrations and a thinner bench of automation-platform connectors, and self-hosting means you are now running a small piece of infrastructure yourself. It suits a small team building something new or anyone already sold on data ownership, not a team whose workflow leans on Airtable's marketplace and integrations.

What it costs

Tier Price For Includes
Free $0/month Individuals or small teams trying it before committing to rows or automation volume. 200 one-time bonus credits, 100 automation runs, 1,000 rows, 1GB of attachments, AI chat and AI fields.
Pro $13/month billed yearly, $24/month billed monthly A small team that has outgrown Free's row and automation limits. 2,000 credits per seat, 25,000 automation runs, 250,000 rows, 10GB of attachments, and all field types.
Business $20/month billed yearly, $36/month billed monthly Teams that need SSO, domain verification or a custom app domain. 3,000 credits per seat, 100,000 automation runs, 1,000,000 rows, 100GB of attachments, GitHub sync, an authority matrix, custom app domain, domain verification and SSO.

What you need to start

  • Cloud: a free account signed up by email, no credit card needed for the Free tier
  • Self-hosting: a machine running Docker and Docker Compose
  • Self-hosting beyond your own machine: your own domain with four DNS records pointing at the server, plus ports 80 and 443 free

A template gives you a working base in about two minutes on Teable's cloud, and the guided quick-start tutorial to build one from scratch takes about half an hour; self-hosting has no stated time from Teable, but a public deployment needs its own domain and DNS records before anyone outside your machine can reach it.

Where it breaks

Open source and self-hostable, or usable as a hosted product; built on Postgres, which matters if you ever need to query your data directly rather than through the app.

First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.

When not to use it

Not for a team whose existing workflow depends on Airtable's app marketplace or its deep bench of Zapier and Make integrations, since Teable's ecosystem is younger and thinner. Also not for someone who wants a fully hands-off hosted product with zero operational responsibility and chooses self-hosting anyway, which trades the Postgres advantage for server upkeep.

Teable’s pitch to an Airtable user is specific: same spreadsheet-on-top-of-a-database interface, same AI fields and app-builder instincts, but open source and running on Postgres instead of a proprietary backend. That matters the moment you want to query your own data directly, or self-host it rather than trust it to someone else’s cloud.

Pricing undercuts Airtable at every tier that’s comparable — Pro starts at $13 a month on annual billing, a fraction of what Airtable’s equivalent seat costs — and the free tier’s 1,000 rows and 100 automation runs are enough to build something real before paying anything.

What actually differs by tier

The jump from Free to Pro is mostly about ceiling: rows go from 1,000 to 250,000, automation runs from 100 to 25,000, attachment storage from 1GB to 10GB. Business adds the things an IT department asks for before letting a team adopt something new — SSO, domain verification, a custom app domain — rather than more raw capacity.

The honest tradeoff against Airtable

Airtable has a much larger app marketplace, more third-party integrations already built, and a longer track record with the automation platforms most small businesses already run, like Make or Zapier. Teable’s advantage is price and data ownership, not ecosystem — pick it if self-hosting or Postgres access matters to you, stay on Airtable if the integrations already in place are doing real work.
