What you'd use it for

Launching a small business or portfolio site quickly by describing it and refining an AI-generated layout, without hiring a designer.

  • Generate a full page layout and starting copy from a single written prompt
  • Publish a live site directly from the editor, with hosting and a domain included
  • Manage a blog or other repeating content through a visual CMS collection
  • Generate responsive breakpoints for mobile and tablet with the AI agent instead of manual resizing

The verdict

Framer is the AI-generation-first choice when you want a good-looking site fast and are willing to hand-edit rather than build from a blank canvas. The free tier is a genuine no-card trial, but real business use, a custom domain, a working CMS, more than a couple of dozen pages, moves you onto Basic or Pro quickly, and every tier caps pages and bandwidth as well as AI credits, so cost tracks both how much you build and how often you regenerate. It suits a portfolio, landing page, or small marketing site more than a content operation with deep, connected data; for that, Webflow's ceiling is higher.

What you need to start

  • A Framer account, no credit card needed for the free tier
  • A domain you own, or one bought through Framer, to move past the framer.site subdomain
  • A paid plan, Basic or above, to remove the Made in Framer badge and connect a custom domain

Signing up and publishing a first page on the free framer.site subdomain takes under ten minutes; a paid, custom-domain site with real content and a working CMS is closer to an afternoon of work.

Your first run Typing a prompt produces a first draft layout in under a minute, and Framer's own quickstart lesson carries a prompt through to a published page in under six minutes; a first result with your own copy and images, ready to show someone, takes closer to fifteen to twenty minutes.

Where it breaks

AI generation is metered in credits rather than unlimited, and the free tier's 500 credits are explicitly a trial allowance, not a sustainable monthly budget — expect to burn through them quickly if you're iterating on page generations rather than editing by hand after the first draft.

Browser-based design tool; no desktop app. Extra editor seats cost $20/month each on paid plans — viewers and workspace owners are free, so cost scales with how many people actually edit, not how many can see the site.

When not to use it

Not for a site that will outgrow a couple of thousand CMS items or need complex relational data models, since Framer's collection and item caps bite well before Webflow's do. Not for anyone who needs a real backend, logins, or application logic; Framer builds and hosts marketing sites, not apps.

Framer arrived after Webflow had already proven that “visual builder, real output” could work, and it made a specific bet: start with the AI generation step, then let a designer refine what comes out, rather than starting from a blank canvas. That bet is now the default way most people open the tool — describe the page, get a structured starting layout, edit from there.

Why the credit system matters when comparing prices

Framer’s paid tiers look similar to Webflow’s on the surface, but the credit allowance behind the AI features is the part that varies by use case. A site built once with AI assistance and then hand-edited afterward barely touches the credit budget. A team that regenerates layouts repeatedly while exploring options will feel the meter much sooner, regardless of which plan they’re on.

Against Webflow

The honest difference is maturity versus speed. Webflow has a decade of CMS depth, a larger ecosystem of built resources, and a steeper but more capable ceiling. Framer is faster to get a good-looking result out of on day one, with less to learn, but historically thinner on the complex CMS relationships and custom code escape hatches that a growing content operation eventually needs. Pick Framer for a portfolio, a landing page, or a small marketing site launched quickly; lean toward Webflow once the site needs to model real, connected data.

What it does not do

Framer builds and hosts a site. It is not a general application builder — for something with real backend logic, that’s Bolt.new or Base44 territory, not this.
