GPT for Work
Brings GPT, Claude and Gemini formulas into Google Sheets, Docs and Excel, so a spreadsheet cell can call an AI model directly.
What you'd use it for
Calling GPT, Claude or Gemini from a formula in an existing spreadsheet, so a column can be generated, classified or extracted without copying text into a chat window.
- Fill a formula such as GPT(prompt, cell) down a column to generate or classify text row by row
- Run one of nine bulk tools -- translate, classify, extract, reformat, generate, rewrite or search the web -- across hundreds of rows in one pass
- Ask an agent in plain language to read the sheet, plan the steps, and write the formulas itself
- Analyse an image from a URL with a vision model in the same sheet as the rest of the data
- Switch between GPT, Claude and Gemini models in the same formula without a separate account for each provider
The verdict
A capable, mature way to run GPT, Claude and Gemini formulas across a spreadsheet without juggling three separate provider accounts -- 7 million-plus installs and a 4.8 rating back that up. Standard and Business plans bundle model usage into the one subscription, so there's no separate provider bill to track, though the included balance is easy to burn through on heavy bulk jobs and extra usage costs more on top. It suits someone already living in Sheets or Excel who wants AI as a formula rather than a chat window; anyone who wants full control of which model runs and at what raw cost should look at the bring-your-own-key option on Business, or elsewhere entirely.
What it costs
| Tier | Price | For | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $25/month | An individual using AI formulas in their own spreadsheets. | $25 of usage/month included, agent and bulk tools, access to a large choice of AI models, usage reporting. |
| Business | $45/seat/month | A team sharing AI formula access with centralised billing. | Everything in Standard per seat, team management, centralised billing and AI configuration, bring-your-own API key. |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | Organisations wanting AI use enforced through their own model and SSO. | Everything in Business, enforced bring-your-own-AI, SAML SSO, high-priority support, guided setup. |

What you need to start
- A Google Workspace account for Sheets and Docs, or Microsoft 365 for Excel, to install the add-in
- A paid GPT for Work subscription from $25/month once the free trial's included usage is used up
A few minutes -- install from the Google Workspace or Microsoft marketplace, grant permissions, and the formulas work immediately with no API key to configure and no credit card needed for the free trial.
Your first run Open the sidebar, type a plain-language request or drop a formula like GPT(prompt, cell) into a column, and generated or classified text fills the cells within the free trial's included credits -- no separate OpenAI, Anthropic or Google account needed to see that first result.
Where it breaks
The FAQ notes that spaces already on the older pay-as-you-go pricing keep that arrangement; the tiered pricing above applies to new spaces.
A Google Workspace and Microsoft add-in; each seat gets a fixed monthly usage allowance that draws down as you use the formula, with extra usage purchasable on top.
First entry in this reference. There is no previous check to compare it against.
When not to use it
Not for someone who already pays for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Gemini Advanced and hopes to reuse that subscription here -- GPT for Work bills its own usage separately regardless of what you already pay a model provider. Also a poor fit for anyone who wants a conversational AI assistant rather than spreadsheet formulas, or whose usage is heavy enough that a per-seat monthly allowance will feel restrictive next to a raw API bill.
The idea is the same one behind every AI-in-a-spreadsheet tool: a formula that takes a prompt and a cell reference and returns a generated or classified answer, fillable down a column like any other function. GPT for Work’s specific edge is model choice — it isn’t locked to one provider, and a single subscription reaches GPT, Claude and Gemini models rather than requiring separate accounts for each.
The usage model is worth understanding before you commit: each seat gets a fixed dollar amount of included usage per month, consumed as tokens are sent and received at the underlying provider’s standard rate plus a service margin. Heavy users can draw from a shared team balance on the Business plan rather than being capped individually — useful when usage is lumpy across a team rather than even.
With 7 million+ installations across Google Workspace and Microsoft marketplaces and a 4.8 rating from thousands of reviewers, this is a mature, well-trodden product rather than a new entrant — a reasonable signal of reliability for something you’ll be running formulas through in a live spreadsheet.
It competes directly with Numerous.ai for the same job; the practical difference is model breadth and the pay-as-you-go option this one still supports for existing customers.
Alternatives
SheetAI
A Google Sheets add-on that generates text, classifies rows, and fills gaps in a spreadsheet using an AI formula instead of copy-pasting from a chat window.
Sourcetable
A spreadsheet where you describe what you want cleaned, modeled, or charted and an AI analyst does the formula and pivot work for you.
Rows
A spreadsheet with live connectors to your other apps and an AI analyst built into the formula bar, so a formula can just be a question.
