What you'd use it for

Capturing and transcribing an in-person conversation — a client visit, a hallway decision — that no video-call recorder was ever in the room to hear.

  • Record audio hands-free by pressing the device once, with no laptop or app open at the time
  • Get an automatic transcript of a recorded conversation once it syncs to the app
  • Get an AI-generated summary of a recording without reading the full transcript
  • Ask follow-up questions about what was said in a recording rather than re-reading it
  • Access and search past recordings from the Plaud web app as well as the phone app

The verdict

Plaud earns its place specifically when the conversation is in person — its whole design is a physical recorder for meetings a laptop was never in the room for. That means buying and charging hardware on top of a subscription, which is a heavier commitment than any software-only recorder on this list. It suits people whose most consequential conversations happen face to face, not people whose meetings already live on Zoom or Teams.

What it costs

Tier Price For Includes
Starter (Free) $0/month Trying the transcription workflow before buying more capacity. 300 transcription minutes a month.
Pro $17.99/month Regular use — a handful of meetings or calls most weeks. 1,200 transcription minutes a month.
Unlimited $19.99/month billed annually, or $29.99/month billed monthly Anyone recording daily who doesn't want to think about a minutes budget. Unlimited transcription minutes.

What you need to start

  • A Plaud device bought separately from the subscription — the NotePin, Note, NotePin S or Note Pro, roughly $110-$190 depending on model and current sales
  • A smartphone running iOS 12 or Android 7 or later, with Bluetooth enabled, to pair with the Plaud app
  • A Plaud account, created in the app before the device can record

Charging runs 2-3 hours from empty, though the device is usable after as little as 15 minutes on the dock; pairing the app over Bluetooth and creating an account takes a few minutes on top of that.

Your first run Once the device is charged and paired to the app over Bluetooth, a single press starts recording; stopping it hands the audio to the app, which produces a transcript and summary you can read or question.

Where it breaks

Plaud runs frequent storewide discounts, so the device prices recorded here (captured mid-sale) are a snapshot, not a stable list price — check the live storefront before treating any of these figures as fixed. The subscription page also lists standalone minute top-up packs (600/3,000/6,000 minutes) whose prices were not visible in the page's static content.

Requires buying a physical device — a pin, a card-shaped recorder, or similar — that pairs with the Plaud app. Not a software-only product.

When not to use it

Not for anyone whose meetings already happen on a video call — a screen-share-native recorder solves the same problem without a second device to remember and charge. Not for anyone unwilling to pay for hardware before the subscription even starts.

Most meeting-recording tools assume you are on a video call, where software can quietly join and listen. Plaud is built for the meeting a laptop can’t attend — a coffee conversation, an in-person client visit, a hallway decision — by putting a small physical recorder in your pocket instead.

The trade is real: you are buying hardware, not just a subscription, and the device has to actually be with you and charged. In exchange, you get transcripts and structured notes from conversations that Colibri.ai or a Zoom-native recorder would never have heard.

The subscription is where the real choice lives

Every device ships with a 300-minute free tier, which is enough to decide whether the workflow fits your life before paying anything further. Past that, the jump from Pro’s 1,200 minutes to Unlimited is the one decision that actually matters — if you’re recording daily, the minutes budget on Pro disappears fast, and Unlimited removes the anxiety of checking a counter mid-conversation.

The honest limitation

Reported figures put Plaud past a million devices sold, and the app quality reflects that scale, but you are still committing to carrying and charging a second piece of hardware. If your meetings are already on video calls, a screen-share-native recorder solves the same problem without asking you to remember a device — this one earns its place specifically when the conversation is in person.
