What you'd use it for

Getting a fast text transcript of a recording, with the option to pay a human to check it when accuracy actually matters.

  • Upload an audio or video file, or paste a URL such as a YouTube link, and get a text transcript back
  • Generate captions and subtitles for video, including translated subtitles in other languages as a paid add-on
  • Escalate any file to a human transcriber for $1.99 a minute when the AI output isn't trusted enough to use as-is
  • Produce legal-specific transcript formats, rough draft or premium, for depositions and hearings
  • Edit the finished transcript directly in Rev's document editor

The verdict

Rev's AI transcription is fast and cheap, but the thing that actually justifies picking Rev over a plain AI transcriber is the always-available human-verification option at $1.99 a minute — run cheap AI by default and escalate only the one file that has to be exactly right. That flexibility isn't bundled: human verification, legal transcript formats and foreign-language subtitles are all billed on top of whatever subscription tier you're paying for, not included in it. It suits legal teams, journalists and media operations who need occasional certainty, not someone who wants one flat monthly price for everything.

What it costs

What you need to start

  • A Rev account, created with an email address
  • A credit card once you go past the free 45 minutes a month, whether by subscribing to a paid tier or ordering human verification at $1.99 a minute

A few minutes to create a free account and run your first AI transcript; add a day if you also need a human-verified version back.

Your first run Paste a file URL or upload an audio or video file and the AI transcript is usually ready in under five minutes; order human verification on the same file and it arrives within 12 hours.

Where it breaks

Subscribers get a discount (3–15% depending on tier) on the human-verified services, but the base $1.99/minute rate applies to anyone paying à la carte.

Web app, with a human-verified transcription and captioning service priced separately at roughly $1.99 a minute for anything the AI output isn't trusted enough to leave unchecked.

When not to use it

Not for anyone expecting the human check to be part of the subscription price — it's billed separately no matter what tier you're on. Not for non-English transcription on the free plan, since that tier is English-only; multilingual support starts at Essentials.

Rev’s real product is the fallback, not the AI. The subscription tiers get you fast, cheap AI transcription and captions at a per-minute allowance, and every tier sits on top of a separate, always-available option: pay $1.99 a minute for a human to check the transcript, delivered in 12 hours or less.

That combination is the reason legal teams, journalists and media companies use Rev over a pure AI transcriber — you can run the cheap version by default and escalate the one interview or deposition that actually needs to be right, without switching vendors.

What the tiers actually buy

The subscription plans differ mainly in minutes and seats: 45 minutes free, 5,000 on Essentials, 10,000 on Pro, unlimited on the custom-priced top tier. None of them include the human-verified service — that’s always billed separately, at a rate that drops slightly the higher your subscription tier.

Rev also sells legal-specific transcript formats (rough draft at $2.25 a page, premium at $2.50) and subtitles in other languages, from $6.49 a minute for common languages up to $15.99 for Japanese or Korean. None of that is included in any subscription — it’s priced on top, which is worth knowing before assuming the monthly plan covers everything a legal or international project needs.
