What you'd use it for

Turning a recording of an interview, meeting or lecture into an accurate, searchable transcript you can edit yourself, in any of 50-plus languages.

  • Upload audio or video and get back a searchable, speaker-labelled transcript
  • Edit the transcript text directly in a browser player that keeps audio and text in sync
  • Translate a finished transcript into another supported language
  • Generate summaries, chapters and automatic subtitles or captions for video
  • Pull in recordings from Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or Webex rather than uploading files one by one

The verdict

Sonix's case is language breadth and a transcript editor that stays fast because everything happens in the browser, audio and text moving together. But every subscription tier is priced for one user — a five-person team on Core costs $125/mo once seats are added, not the $25/mo headline price — and under about two hours a month, the $10/hr Pay As You Go tier beats any subscription. It suits someone who transcribes occasionally to often and wants a clean editor, not a team hoping recordings show up on their own.

What it costs

Tier Price For Includes
Pay As You Go $10/hr Occasional, one-off transcription jobs. 5 hrs/mo included, additional hours billed at $10/hr, single-user account.
Core $25/mo ($275/yr) An individual with steady, ongoing transcription needs. 20 hrs/mo transcription, 25 GB storage, self-serve support.
Advanced $50/mo ($550/yr) A growing team needing more monthly hours. 40 hrs/mo transcription, 50 GB storage, email support.
Pro $80/mo ($880/yr) A team relying on transcription as part of daily workflow. More monthly hours, 100 GB storage, priority email and chat support.

What you need to start

  • A Sonix account, created with an email address
  • A credit card at signup, even to use the free 30-minute trial
  • An audio or video file to upload, or a connected Zoom, Teams, Meet or Webex recording

A couple of minutes to create an account, though the card prompt at signup slows down anyone expecting a true no-card trial; the first transcript itself is usually back within minutes of uploading.

Your first run Upload a file and a searchable, speaker-labelled transcript is typically back within minutes; the free trial covers your first 30 minutes of audio but asks for a card at signup before it will run.

Where it breaks

Extra seats on any multi-user plan cost +$25/mo (+$275/yr) each, on top of the base tier price — the tier price alone does not cover a team.

When not to use it

Not for a team that wants a bot to join calls automatically off a shared calendar and hand back a summary unprompted — Sonix connects to Zoom and Teams but still needs a recording brought to it, which is a job Happy Scribe's calendar-synced notetaker does instead. Also not the cheapest choice for one person doing under two hours of transcription a month, where paying by the hour beats committing to a subscription.

Sonix does one job — turn a recording into text — and has been doing it long enough that it shows up in nearly every transcription comparison list without much fanfare. You upload a file, it comes back with a searchable transcript, and you edit mistakes in a browser player that keeps the audio and text in sync.

Against Happy Scribe, the main difference is where the money goes: Sonix leads with language coverage — 50-plus languages for transcription, with translation on top — while Happy Scribe leans harder into the AI-chat-with-your-recording layer on top of the transcript.

What you are actually paying for

The Pay As You Go tier at $10/hr is the honest option for someone with one interview to transcribe this month and nothing recurring. The subscription tiers (Core, Advanced, Pro) bundle a monthly hour allowance at a lower effective rate, which only pays off once you are transcribing regularly — under about two hours a month, Pay As You Go is cheaper.

Every subscription tier is priced for a single user; adding a colleague costs an extra $25/mo per seat regardless of which tier you are on, so a five-person team on Core is not a $25/mo tool, it is a $125/mo tool.

What it does not do

Sonix transcribes and translates. It does not sit in your calendar and join meetings automatically the way a live meeting bot does — you upload a file after the fact, and any summarising beyond that is on you.
